Maternal Journal- Sussex Circles

Arts & Culture

The in-person venue is currently located on the second floor and unfortunately does not have lift access. We recognise this creates a significant accessibility barrier for some participants and we want to be transparent about this limitation. Because accessibility matters deeply to The Madre Project

We recommend that you bring your own sketchbook and any other favourite art materials that you might like to use.

Maternal Journal is a creative space for all mothers and birthing people. We warmly welcome cis women, trans women, non-binary parents. Babes in arms/children under 1 are welcome also. We are working on offering this session online also for those with caring needs that cannot attend in person.

No. We require all attendees to book via Eventbrite so we can ensure we have prepared adequately for you, spaces are limited.

There will be an introduction/a check in, some mindfulness, a prompt as an invitation (not a demand), a good amount of time to create, space to share or listen (or both), refreshments and a closing activity.

Who is Louise?

Louise is a qualified Art Psychotherapist working with children, young people & adults in Sussex. She attended Maternal Journal sessions herself previously, as a mother, so she knows first hand the benefits that these sessions can bring to mothers from all walks of life.

She now wants to combine her passion for giving space to women to gather, being in touch with (mother) nature's rhythms, as well as releasing emotions onto paper, creatively.

What is Maternal Journal?

Maternal Journal groups are designed for women experiencing the emotional and physical changes and challenges in pregnancy, birth and motherhood.

By setting up a regular creative practice, you allow yourself time and space to record and reflect on your experiences - both happy moments and tougher times.

Why journaling?

You don't need to be a writer or an artist to start journaling. Journaling has long been part of our feminist history and we encourage you to explore this inspiring legacy as a powerful way to support the changes, challenges and creativity of being a mother.

About The Madre Project

Sandy is founder of The Madre Project & a lecturer in philosophy at The University of Chichester, where she is researching a PhD on the biopolitics of motherhood. She is also an artist and creative, passionate about bringing people together in community and solidarity.
