Mindful Photography Workshop, Woods Mill Nature Reserve

Workshops

In our fast-paced world, mindful photography is an opportunity to take some quiet, reflective time for ourselves, connect more deeply with nature and find new ways of expressing our creativity.

It is not about having the right kit or learning to take technically perfect photographs but instead a gentle approach that enables us to find wonder in the ordinary, making this course ideal for seasoned photographers and beginners alike. No prior experience is required. All you need is a smartphone or camera and your curiosity!

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” Dorothea Lange

During the course you will:

· be introduced to what mindful photography is (and isn’t!)

· explore simple exercises designed to help you slow down and look at nature with fresh eyes.

· have opportunities to share your images and reflections (no pressure to share if you would rather not) and maybe rest a while with a nature poem or two. Feel free to bring a notebook and pen to jot down any observations.

The exercises will be very flexible, allowing you to focus on whatever interests you in the moment, whether it’s the veins of a leaf, a reflection in a pond, the changing colours overhead or the gossamer of a spider’s web.

You can take a little wander away from base or stay in the same spot. By the end of the session, you will have tools that can be used anytime and anywhere to take a few mindful moments for yourself to find the beauty around you.

You would be very welcome to stay and enjoy a picnic or explore the rest of the reserve after the session.

Meeting Point: Woods Mill Nature Reserve, Henfield BN5 9SD

We will meet at the picnic tables directly across the bridge from the car park.

Jo Osborne, who has recently moved to Sussex from Oxfordshire, is a trained mindful photography practitioner offering nature-based sessions for small groups. She also enjoys abstract nature photography using a range of techniques.

Attendees from Jo's previous courses have said: “Jo delivered mindful photography workshops at Bridge Street Community Garden, where I work as Garden Officer. Her approach was thoughtful and accessible, and she explained everything very clearly. The sessions were inspiring and encouraged participants to explore photography from a different angle, focusing on experience rather than the final image, and using photography as a way to notice, connect with, and experience nature. I would highly recommend her workshops.” - Tila R
