Match Preview: Worthing FC vs Solihull Moors

Following an unbeaten run that was extended to eight league matches last Saturday courtesy of a 2-1 away win over Gateshead, the National League South Champions lie in fifth position as we approach Matchweek 13 of the season.

Jack Wadham and an own goal sealed our sixth victory of the campaign in the North East, which was swiftly complimented by an accomplished midweek display in the Sussex Transport Senior Cup over the holders Three Bridges, with another success in the form of a 3-0 victory.

Tomorrow’s opponents Solihull also triumphed on Tuesday night by virtue of a slender win over Newcastle United U21s in the National League Cup, but their record in the fifth tier has paled in comparison. A disappointing start to the campaign has left the Moors languishing in 23rd position, with only Gateshead picking up fewer points in the opening quarter of the 2026/27 term.

By roughly 5pm on Saturday, the league table will embark on a state of motionless for two weeks, as all 24 National League teams are in Emirates FA Cup action next weekend around the country.

The Opposition

An uncharacteristic start to the campaign will naturally be raising eyebrows amongst the Solihull Moors fanbase, who have become accustomed to comfort in the National League.

This season marked a decade of competing at this level, and for all of their positive moments over the last 10 years, including coming within touching distance of reaching the Football League on multiple occasions, so far this campaign is being filed under ‘needs improvement.’

With the leakiest defence in the division (30 goals conceded in just 12 matches – an average of 2.5 per game) and only three points accrued on home turf, manager Chris Millington has a task on his hands to turn spirits around at Damson Park.

Rays of hope have appeared in recent weeks, with a victories over Barrow AFC and Woking, but their inconsistencies has still yielded heavy losses to the likes of Yeovil Town and league leaders Boreham Wood.

The collection of three points in Tuesday night in the National League Cup will spark optimism into the Solihull ranks ahead of a first-ever trip to Woodside Road.

A merger between Solihull Borough (founded 1953) and Moor Green (founded 1901) resulted in Solihull Moors being founded in 2007, meaning they will celebrate 20 years of existence next year.

The Gaffer

The experience of manager Chris Millington is required to help steer Solihull Moors away from the distant doom of relegation.

An UEFA A Licence Coach, Millington is approaching a year anniversary since taking over the Moors – a job he earned off the back of a largely successful spell in charge of FC Halifax Town.

The 50-year-old is closely linked with now Hartlepool United manager Pete Wild, having spent three years working together as a key part of his backroom staff at Oldham Athletic and with the Shaymen.

After being appointed to succeed Wild at the Shay Stadium, Millington won the FA Trophy in 2023 and guided the club to two play-off finishes.

That exact expertise helped the Moors manager lead his current employers to mid-table last year, which will be needed again to prevent a first demotion in a decade.

Millington has also worked in the academy set-ups at Curzon Ashton, Macclesfield and Stockport County.

One to Watch

Teenage prospect Ben Wodskou return to injury on Tuesday night was marked with an equaliser in the eventual 2-1 home win over Newcastle United U21s.

Solihull Moors have sorely missed the Birmingham City loanee’s attacking prowess, with the 19-year-old spending almost a month on the sidelines.

Prior to his picking up his injury in the 2-1 loss to Aldershot Town on September 12, a match in which Wodskou scored and missed a penalty, the striker had already opened his account in the National League Cup and supplied two assists in the league.

The temporary spell at Damson Park is his fourth loan away from Birmingham, having previously spent time with Rushall Olympic, Yeovil Town and Brackley Town.

Not celebrating his 20th birthday until the end of the month, Wodskou’s versatility and offensive output is a massive asset to a Solihull side craving match-winners.
