Boom Sauce
Unwrapped

We thought it was about time for another 'Independent Worthing: Unwrapped' for you all...and this time we have a firm local indie favourite - Maryann from BOOM sauce!
Now, we have a spice divide in our house - one total spice fiend and one 'as long as it's not to hot' moderate. The beauty of BOOM sauce is that it somehow manages to satisfy both our requirements at the same time - we don't know how Maryann does it - maybe it's the depth of flavours, or the small batch approach - and it's also easy to add extra at the table if you want.
We use BOOM in alot of our cooking these days; it's sooo good on most cooked breakfasts and notches up the flavours in alot of dinners too...we definitely recommend it as a store cupboard ESSENTIAL. There's other flavours (including smokey) - in fact we had facun sandwiches this morning with BOOMchup as it goes.
Maryann and her family are lovely. You will find her at a lot of markets around Worthing, and BOOM is stocked at lots of outlets locally, including Le Deli in Southfarm Road, and Souk in South Street.
We loved hearing her thoughts for our little 'Unwrapped' feature - and hope you do too.
IW: What inspired you to start your own business?
M: Some years ago, my Uncle in Trinidad gave me some chilli sauce he had made. And whenever I would visit him, he would always encourage me to open up a restaurant and make Trini food for the people of the South Coast. But that was a lot of talk over a LOT of Trini rum! I tried to recreate his chilli sauce but added my own twist. I began to sell to friends and family and it was so popular....Boom Sauce was created in June 2019. My first flavour Fix Up D'heat was named after his favourite saying, whenever he would like his glass topped up with rum my Uncle would say "Fix up, Fix up, Maryann!"
IW: What is the best thing about what you do?
M: Creating flavours in the Boom Kitchen and sharing that flavour experience with my customers. It is amazing when they taste it for the first time and feel like they are transported to the Caribbean and their mouth pops with all the flavours.
IW: What pearl of wisdom would you impart to anyone wanting to set up their own business?
M: Make sure it is something that you believe in, love & have passion for it to grow. Schedule time out to relax as you will be working so hard that you need time out for friends and family.
IW: What are your 'go to' local businesses?
M: We have lots of amazing local businesses and I love to not only support them but also champion them on my social media platforms. Le Deli, Mangiamo, Shannons Butchers, Park View, Wine & Reason, Loulabelle, C-Gas Service Ltd, Jimmy McBride Roofing, MW Fencing & Decking, Peak Boxing.
IW: What do you get up to in your spare time?
M: We are lucky to live by the beach and my girls are at their happiest when they are walking along the beach or swimming.
IW: What's your guilty pleasure?
M: A cheese board of all my favourite cheeses and red wine.
IW: What's your favourite way to start the day?
M: Chilli sauce kick starts your metabolism and releases good endorphins to set you up for the day. So, it has to be poached egg on toast with Boom Sauce.
IW: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things could you not do without?
M: I could not do without my hubby and two girls with me.
IW: What plans do you have for the future?
M: I have been busy in the Boom Kitchen developing some new sauce & working on an exciting new product which will be released very soon, so watch this space! I am absolutely thrilled that Boom Sauce has been approached by lots of channels from, BBC1, CH4, CH5, Netflix & Amazon to have the sauce on sets of some series and films. This is super excited and can no wait to see my sauce on TV!
