It's a good one this week folks! Independent Worthing: Unwrapped meets the lovely Sophie Cohen from the one and only Cactus Kitchen Gals!
We really miss Sophie's amazing vegan fast-food style eatery in the town centre...omg those notzarella sticks!!!! those burgers!!!!! But - thank the food gods, because Sophie is popping up all around Worthing with her stunning vegan cakes and unique flare for all things deelish.
Her yummy delights can be found at The Vegan Street Food Company, Bird & Blend, HISBE, and of course, the Independent Worthing Artisan Markets in South Farm Road. Sophie has also just announced her move to a new premises in Littlehampton, upstairs from the equally scrumptious Cat Burglar Dough Co - sounds like a dream team! We hope she goes from strength to strength and can't wait to see what this bundle of talent does next!
IW: What inspired you to start your own business?
CKG: I had always loved cooking and a lot of my friends had always said how tasty my food was, then after being vegan for 6 months I decided … time to be a chef innit.
IW: What is the best thing about what you do?
CKG: Honestly, so many people are allergic or intolerant to dairy, gluten, soya, nuts and more and the smile on people’s faces when they try something I have made that they can actually eat and enjoy is priceless!
I am definitely one for fussy eaters (I was a fussy eater until like 20) and for those that have dietary requirements.
IW: What pearl of wisdom would you impart to anyone wanting to set up their own business?
CKG: Be persistent. There are always going to be people that tell you your idea is silly or not needed, but if you know you have something special, make it work. You got to put in the work and prove those people wrong, while making yourself happy.
IW: What are your ‘go to’ local businesses?
CKG: There are so many nowadays – I love shopping local! I work with Hisbe in Worthing, the new independent supermarket, I make a tonne of cakes + brownies for them and get most of my groceries there. I am a sucker for Cat Burglar Donuts, Emma makes the biggest + tastiest vegan donuts I have ever had! I have also spent a small fortune in the last 6 months on earrings from LoveCrest, Louise makes all of the earrings herself and I am honestly in love with every pair.
IW: What do you get up to in your spare time?
CKG: HA … good one. To be honest, any free time I have is usually curled up on the sofa with Peach (my dog) re watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race, IT Crowd, The Office, Mock the Week … or some other show I have seen a million times with a cup of tea … and maybe a digestive biscuit or two. Comfy nights in are my go-to.
IW: What’s your guilty pleasure?
CKG: I do like a musical … like when I’m baking or prepping and I am on my own, I have been known to listen to Hairspray (the broadway soundtrack obvs) or Matilda and belt along (attempt to).
IW: What’s your favourite way to start the day?
CKG: Mornings are not good for me … I am definitely a night time owl. Saying that, a snuggle with Peach, a shower and putting on a nice pair of earrings is what keeps me going sometimes.
IW: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things could you not do without?
CKG: Ahhh the classic desert island vegans are asked about so much. I am great at being on my own but terrible in the sun, with that in mind I am taking sun tan lotion, a cosy blanket and honestly … my phone – its music, books, camera, social media, and a way of contacting people.
IW: What plans do you have for the future?
CKG: I am working on some really exciting collaborations, I can’t wait to release Halloween + Christmas goodies, I’m moving soon and that’s going to be so cool but I’m not ready to tell you where to just yet.
