Unwrapped

PUBLISHED: 10 July '21

In the next instalment of our Independent Worthing: Unwrapped series, we meet Izzie Keenan, one half of the team behind the superb sweet treats at Slice.

IW: What inspired you to start your own business?

IK: What tipped me over the edge to actually get up and start my own business was lockdown 0.1, I’d been ‘umming’ and ‘ahhing’ about it for years but this just felt like the right time, and we had lots of it when we lost our jobs as personal chefs on rock & roll tours!

IW: What is the best thing about what you do?

IK: My absolute favourite thing is delivering to customers family and friends ‘a little gift from your daughter’ and the light in people’s faces is next to none, especially when they haven’t been able to see their loved ones in so long!

IW: What pearl of wisdom would you impart to anyone wanting to set up their own business?

IK: Willpower and determination must be at the forefront of your businesses mind, just to carry on even if you feel disheartened. It will prevail.

IW: What are your ‘go to’ local businesses?

Hisbe supermarket has got to be my most visited place in Worthing. The incredible Wednesday market in town is great for picking up fresh local produce. Small batch & flour pot for there excellent coffee. And Tasty Thai on Brighton road takes me back to Thailand.

IW: What do you get up to in your spare time?

I'd love to say I have spare time!! Most hours in the day I’m either doing something for Slice or looking after my Son. But we love visits to the beach, seeing family & friends more and more which is making me feel more human! Scouting out farmers markets and finding restaurant gems in Sussex.

IW: What’s your guilty pleasure?

IK: Eating all the leftover cakes!

IW: What’s your favourite way to start the day?

IK: Making a fresh juice with all the lovely local produce I’ve bought from local markets.

IW: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things could you not do without?

IK: Matches, sun cream & doughnuts.

IW: What plans do you have for the future?

IK: Our plans are to save up as much as we possibly can to opening something of our own, to sell in as many local shops/cafes/restaurants as possible and get our name out there.

IW: Is there anything else you would like to add?

IK: We take requests of every size; from wedding catering to a special box of choccies. Please check our new website @ www.haveaslice.co.uk.
