Wholetime Firefighter Discovery Session

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a firefighter? Are you interested in finding out more about a career with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service?

Join us for a free, in-person Firefighter Discovery Session, where you'll have the opportunity to explore the role, meet serving firefighters and recruitment representatives, and gain a practical insight into life in the fire and rescue service.

Held at one of our fire stations, the session will give you the chance to experience elements of the firefighter role and find out more about the skills, training and qualities needed to become a firefighter.

During the session, you'll have the opportunity to:

• Meet serving firefighters and members of our recruitment team.
• Explore the fire station environment and learn more about life at the station.
• Find out about firefighter training and the recruitment process.
• Take part in practical exercises similar to those used in firefighter recruitment assessments.
• Get hints, tips and advice to help you prepare for a future application.
• Ask questions and hear first-hand experiences from our firefighters.

Whether you're actively considering a career in the fire and rescue service or simply curious to find out more, this is a great opportunity to discover what the role involves.

We’re also offering a dedicated women-focussed Discovery session. The session will provide an opportunity for women to learn more about the role, to build understanding and confidence around specific fitness requirements and hear from women currently serving within West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

Bringing a friend or companion

You are welcome to bring a friend or companion along for support if you wish. Please note that companions will be able to observe but will not be able to take part in the practical activities. If your friend or companion would also like to participate in the session, they must book their own place separately.

All applicants and companions must be aged 17 years and 6 months or over. Unfortunately, children cannot attend.

What to wear and bring

Please ensure you:

• Wear comfortable clothing that you can move around in and suitable trainers.
• Bring any snacks or refreshments you may need during the session.
• Bring any medication you may require.

Places are limited, so we encourage you to book early to avoid disappointment. We will confirm further information regarding the event, such as parking and where to go, once you have booked your place.
